Skem were down to the bare bones on Tuesday night, with injuries limiting Paul McNally’s side to just three substitutes on Tuesday night at the JMO, and their cause was not helped when Tom Ruffer put the visitors, second from bottom of the North West Counties league a unexpected lead. in front after just 4 minutes. Things got worse as former Skem man Joe Holt added a second on the half hour, Skem were looking at 3 defeats in a row.

Danny Mitchley pulled one back for Paul McNally’s men on 35 minutes to give the home side some hope going into the second half.

The second half saw United produce the goods and in stunning style Joe Nicholson drew the sides level on 53 minutes with a trademark run and finish, then Danny Mitchley netted to take United in front on 63 minutes, it was Mitchley’s 50th goal for the club. With their tails up Skem piled on the pressure, with Mikey Howard adding a fourth just 3 minutes later.

Substitute Elliott Morris put the icing on the cake with a spectacular 5th and seal all three points for the Blue boys. It could and should have been more, but with the start United had Paul McNally will be grateful for the points.

Paul McNally said after the game, “There were words spoken at half time, the lads knew that first half performance was not acceptable, they went out second half and showed what they are capable of”.

United’s challengers at the top Macclesfield drew 2-2 at Irlam and are now just one point ahead, although having a game in hand.
