“Passionate tutors” and a “strong and effective board of governors” are just two of the reasons Lancashire Adult Learning College (LALC) is celebrating a good rating in its latest Ofsted report.

Staff and students at LALC have been left delighted after improving two grades in just over one year – being named as “good” in all areas, including “Effectiveness of leadership and management”, “Quality of teaching, learning and assessment” and “Personal development, behaviour and welfare”.

In the summary of findings, inspectors have said leaders and managers took “swift and successful action to improve the quality of provision and outcomes for learners” and that tutors “set high aspirations and expectations, using a wide range of activities to enable most learners to reach their potential”. The proportion of learners successfully achieving qualifications, the strategy to engage and recruit learners, initial assessments of learners’ individual needs, and development of functional skills in English and Mathematics, were also praised.

County Councillor Tony Martin, cabinet member for adult services at Lancashire County Council, which is responsible for Lancashire Adult Learning College, said: “This is great news. We’ve been applauded by Ofsted for making effective changes that are now having a really positive impact.

“We won’t rest on our laurels though and we are committed to continuing these improvements which will benefit adult learners across the county even more.

“We know what we need to do to improve further to continue to make a difference and we’re on track with these.”

Principal of LALC Amanda Melton, said: “We are absolutely delighted with the results of our latest Ofsted inspection, which have seen us be named ‘good’ across the board.

“Our staff are truly exceptional and have worked tirelessly over the past year to help make positive changes to LALC’s delivery.

“The individual needs of students are at the very heart of our provision, and we look forward to now continuing our work with adult learners with our new status as a ‘good’ provider.”

Improvements made include a new focus on Adult and Community Learning and changes to the way the college is governed and led.

Lancashire Adult Learning College provides learning at more than 120 community-based venues. It provides courses in many subject areas and also focuses on family learning and community development.

LALC also caters for adults who are job seeking and brushing up on their English, Maths and IT skills; adults who have a learning disability; those who want a supported return to learning; and families, parents and children working together to learn together.
