UPDATE: Man charged in Skelmersdale murder investigation

Detectives investigating the death of a man in Skelmersdale have today (Tuesday 31st March 2020) charged a man with murder.

Police were contacted by the Ambulance Service at shortly after 4:40am on Saturday to a report a man was unconscious after being found with a stab wound at an address on Acregate.

He was taken to Aintree Hospital where he was sadly pronounced dead a short time later.

A subsequent post mortem examination revealed the cause of his death to be a single stab wound to his chest.

He can now be named as Kristaps Muzikants, 30 (pictured)

Following enquiries and after consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service 36-year-old Janis Mikitovs, of Acregate, Skelmersdale, has been charged with murder.

He is due to appear before Preston Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday April 1st.

A 30-year-old arrested on suspicion of murder has been released without charge.

Detectives are trying to piece together Mr Muzikants’ final movements and are asking anyone who knows anything about the incident to come forward.

Detective Chief Inspector Gareth Willis from Lancashire’s Force Major Investigation Team (FMIT) said: “My thoughts remain with Kristaps’ family, who are being supported by specially trained officers.

“While we have charged a man our enquiries are continuing and I would appeal to anyone who has any information to get in touch with us.”
