Charnock Richard 0-6 Skelmersdale United

Skem United claimed their first piece of silverware of the season when they demolished Charnock 6-0 in the Reusch Cup Final, the curtain raiser to the North West Counties season, United had been invited to compete after finishing second in the league last season.

Before the game manager Paul McNally said “we have had some tough old encounters with Charnock over the years and I expect the same again today” his words were an incentive to the players, within two minutes United had taken the league with new signing Jordan Southworth finding the back of the net.

United with 5 debutants in the starting 11, including young keeper James Dineley replacing Ben Barnes at the last minute due to an injury in the warm-ups were quickly in control giving their hosts nothing more than a sniff at goal.

Josh Nicholson put United two ahead on 38 minutes and the first half domination continued when Elliott Morris tapped in for United’s 3rd right on half time.

It had been a pretty impressive display from United who were pushed all the way in last seasons promotion race by Charnock.

Skem started the second period again with an early goal and again it was a new signing that made his mark, Karl Clair popping up to get United’s 4th on 48 minutes, moments later and it was 5 with stand in skipper Sam Sheen finishing with aplomb.

United made a number of substitutions, one which could have made the history books. Youngster Jamie Nicholson came on to replace his elder brother Josh after 67 minutes and with Joe Nicholson already in the starting line-up it was the first time that three brothers had appeared in a competitive match for United, sadly not all on the field at the same time.

And it was the youngest Nicholson, Jamie, who sealed the comprehensive victory when he added United’s 6th on 75 minutes.

Paul McNally was obviously delighted with the victory “we came here expecting a really tough game but the lads have worked their socks off, we are not getting carried away with one result but it gives us a massive boost going forward this season”.

United line up: Dineley, Griffiths, Hont, Conteh, Herbert, Sheen, Morris, Joe Nicholson, Southworth, Clair, Josh Nicholson. Subs: Jamie Nicholson, Servuts, Croughan, Brannigan.

United continue with their final pre-season game next Saturday 30th July at the JMO when Welsh Premier League side Flint Town are the visitors, the game kicks off at 3pm Admission £6, con £3 Under 16s £1.

United start their season with a FA Cup encounter on 6th August when Padiham visit the JMO, the league begins in earnest the following Saturday as United step out in the Northern Premier League when Trafford will be the visitors on Saturday 13th August.

New Chairman Gordon Johnson is urging the local towns people to get behind the club “we have got something special going on here and if we are to be a successful town football team then we need the people to come down to give us their backing”.
