Skelmersdale United continued their good form of late with a 2-1 win over Prestwich Heys. Paul McNally’s side have now lost once in their last 12 games and that to an inform Irlam.

It was a slow start to proceedings, it was the visitors however who had the best of the early chances, both from freekicks, first after 18 minutes Corey Kelly from 25 yards saw his shot go just over the top and 3 minutes later, the leagues leading scorer Jack Coop saw his effort leave Ben Barnes rooted to the spot as the ball sailed just wide of the upright, it was a warning for the Skem defence.

United took the lead on 32 minutes as Adbul Djalo was impeded on the edge of the box, up stepped United’s Player of the Month Mickey Howard with a terrific shot that had the keeper beaten at his near post.

Joe Herbert added United’s second just 2 minutes later, a Kenny Strickland through ball found Baba Conteh who beat his man pulled the ball back to the centre of the box and big Joe swept home.

As the United fans were anticipating a cricket score disaster stuck, new boy Callum Lees and the keeper got in a terrible tangle with Lees ending up putting the ball into his own net.

The second half produced many attacking moments from both sides, United came closest with a close range effort from Danny Mitchley that brought out a top class save from the Heys keeper Tom Simpson. Jack Coop going closest for the visitors with a rasping drive that went just wide.

In the final 10 minutes United piled on the pressure, Mitchley, Adegbenro and Tom Croughan all having chances to extend the lead, all failing to find the target with Greg Daniels almost stealing a share of the points right at the death as his freekick again just missed the upright.

It was a right battle out there said United Manager Paul McNally, we had chances galore to see the game out, credit to Heys who battled on throughout the 90 minutes.

The result sees United back up to second place in the NWCounties and with leaders Macclesfield dropping points United closed the gap at the top.
