Macclesfield 1-0 Skelmersdale United

Skelmersdale United came away from the league leaders Macclesfield with a narrow 1-0 defeat, Macc under new manager Dave McNab would have known more about the Skem squad as no fewer than 7 of the travelling party had previously worked with him.

There were very few fireworks for the 3,308 supporters present to enjoy, in a stalemate first half, separated by a James Berry strike on 31 minutes, with United failing to clear their lines, the front man was put through on goal and calmly clipped over Sam Ashton in the United goal. United’s best effort came from set pieces, Declan Mclaughlin going closest for Richard Brodies men with a well drilled shot that brought the best out of on loan Liverpool keeper Marcelo Pitaluga.

Macc who have a number of ex-Football League players in their squad, showed why they are favourites to win this season’s league, they kept the ball well and at times had United chasing shadows. United’s grit and determination at the back with Herbert, Freeman and debutant Harry Hagen all performing heroics to keep the defence secure.

Carl Clair went closest for United, a long-range shot failing to trouble the keeper and James Berry could have doubled the hosts lead 5 minutes from time only to be denied by Skem keeper Ashton.

Richard Brodie said after the game, “Disappointed with the result, but not the performance, we played well as a group and limited their chances, they beat highly fancied Workington 4-1 in midweek so I think our performance speaks volumes of the progress we are making here at the moment. We won’t win every game but if we work hard like today, we won’t go far wrong”.
