Skelmersdale United 1-0 Ramsbottom United

Skelmersdale United claimed all 3 points in this hard-fought contest thanks to a real poacher’s goal from Ste Milne, a shot well saved at the near post by Sam Ashton propelled Skem onto a quick counter attack, flying winger Elliott Morris lead the charge the initial shot was deflected for a corner.

Morris swung the ball out wide and Mcloughlin drilled home into the box where Milne snapped up his chance from 2 yards out. It was no more than United deserved, a game that saw them dominate possession whilst creating more clear-cut opportunities.

United started brightly, Danny O’Brien found space in the box as early as the 3rd minute, some last ditch defending sawed the day for the visitors, Elliott Morris went on a solo run, his effort just wide of the upright, Callum Lees rose above everybody from a Morris corner his header comfortably saved by Wooster.

United piled on the pressure, a succession of corners ended when Mcloughlin’s 20-yard screamer just grazed the bar, O’Brien made a break from his own half to set up Milne, Wooster on loan from Manchester United did well to keep out a low shot across his bow.

Rammy’s best chance of the half saw Southworth put in a telling cross, McNair in acres of space failed to make a telling touch.

Rammy, with new manager in charge, Dave Chadwick, a former blue with over 100 games to his name came out more at the start of the second period, Ashton making a smart stop from Scanlon but it was Milne’s opportunist goal on 65 minutes that was the difference between the two sides.

Elliott Morris nearly doubled their lead after a spell of quick one touch football that involved at least 7 players, the final shot went just wide, it certainly would have been a goal to remember.

With the 90 minutes up United manager Richard Brodie was shown a red card for allegedly kicking the ball away, a decision that didn’t go down to well with the Skem faithful, who thought the defender made the most of it.

With the very last kick of the game Rammy almost salvaged a point, Jordan Southworth, a former “blue” found space on the right, advancing on goal he let fly with a thunderous drive, the ball skimmed the crossbar and United claimed all 3 points.

Richard Brodie spoke after the game “We deserved to win today, we were superb from front to back, just wish we could have scored a few more to settle the nerves at the end when Rammy came back at us”.
