Celebrate VE Day at home

0

The Council has put together some great ideas to help everyone celebrate the 75th anniversary of VE Day at home this weekend.

Why not try a 1940s recipe, make bunting or try the lindy hop dance. More information is on our website www.westlancs.gov.uk/veday75.

Councillor Ian Moran, Leader of West Lancashire Borough Council and an ex-serviceman, said: “VE Day is one of the most important days in our history and we want to commemorate the sacrifices made by everyone involved in the war effort. Staying safe is the priority and we can still do this by showing our appreciation of what others have done for us in the past as well as reflecting on the efforts many are making for us today.”

Mayor of West Lancashire Councillor Gaynar Owen is giving special VE Day tributes which you can see by following us on Facebook and Twitter at 3pm on Friday (8 May) and 10.30am on Sunday (10 May) and on the Council website at those times. The Union Flag will be flying high outside the Council offices over the bank holiday weekend.

Councillor Owen said: “I am honoured to be able to give these tributes on such a special occasion to those who sacrificed so much for our freedom.”

There will be a national two minutes silence at 11am on Friday and the Queen will address the nation at 9pm which is the same time her father, King George VI, gave a radio address in 1945.

Following this Dame Vera Lynn will lead the nation in singing ‘We’ll meet again’ and everyone is encouraged to join in from their doorsteps. The words will be available via links on the Council website www.westlancs.gov.uk/veday75.
