As the country celebrated the Queen’s 90th Birthday earlier this month, so too did young people at Tickle Avenue Seniors Youth Club, who, with help from St Helens Council’s Youth Service, hosted a special event for older residents.

Taking place in Parr’s Salvation Army Centre, the young people took on all aspects of the event organising and arranged themed quizzes, bingo, music and dancing, and plenty food and drinks.

The young people had never planned an event before, and developed many transferable skills in the process, such as time-management, teamwork and communication.

One person who went above and beyond was Carl Smith, a young musician with social communication difficulties, who often DJs for Youth Service groups and events. Carl provided music and karaoke for the Queen’s Birthday celebration, assisted by helper Adam Garvey.

Councillor Jeanie Bell, Cabinet Member for Public Health and Wellbeing with responsibility for the Youth Service, said:

“It’s always great to see the negative perceptions some hold about young people proven wildly inaccurate, and that’s definitely been done here by those who took it upon themselves to host the event.

“Feedback from residents was really positive. They commented on the maturity of the young people and there have been requests for more events in the future, showing that youth club members are creating a more cohesive and connected community. Well done to all those involved!”
