Samuel and Joseph Hurst aged 5 and 7 from Upholland raised £50 for vulnerable families overseas by walking 6 miles together.

During the month of Lent the two brothers took part in national fundraising campaign Walk for Water, run by international development charity CAFOD.

The boys embarked on this impressive challenge after watching a video about a young Ethiopian man named Abdella, who walks up to 10 hours each day to fetch water for his family.

Sarah Hurst, Samuel and Joseph’s mother is delighted at her sons’ fundraiser and says how lovely it is that they took action to help others in need.

“I’m so proud of my sons and what they’ve been able to raise for the Walk for Water challenge.

“We are hoping to fundraise again and would like to open up the sponsorship to the rest of the parish.”

Congratulating the Samuel and Joseph’s amazing achievement, the family’s local Parish Priest, Fr Philip Kehoe said:

“Samuel and Joseph inspire other children to think about others and the most vulnerable communities of our world. All the parishioners gave them a rousing clap to show their appreciation for all they had done.

“Well done Joseph and Samuel, keep up the good work.”

CAFOD’s local representative for the Lancashire area, Siobhan Farnell concludes:

Samuel and Joseph’s story inspires me as it demonstrates how we each can do something to bring about change for the better.

“St Teresa’s Parish in Upholland have been wonderful supporters of CAFOD for many years and it is fabulous to see that support being continued by some of the youngest parishioners.

“Joseph and Samuel’s support along with the other individuals who have walked and raised funds across the whole of England and Wales will really make a difference to the lives of our sisters and brothers overseas.

“It’s inspiring to hear how they were motivated to put their faith into action after watching the video of Abdella and his daily walk for water.

“On behalf of CAFOD and our partners overseas we thank all who support us.”

Delivered by international development charity CAFOD (Catholic Agency for Overseas Development) the Walk for Water challenge encouraged people to walk, run, dance or hop to raise money for communities around the world that don’t have access to clean, fresh water.
