Would you like to be a Councillor?

On Thursday 2 May 2019 voters in West Lancashire will be going to the Polls to elect Councillors for their area.

West Lancashire Borough Council and 10 local Parish Councils are holding elections on 2 May 2019 and new candidates are able to stand in them if they meet the eligibility criteria. There will be 18 seats contested in this year’s Borough Council elections, one in each of the 18 Borough Wards, and 81 seats across the Parishes that are up for election.

Councillors have three main roles:

  • To represent the people in their local area and listen to their views
  • To make decisions about how the Council is run, what services should be provided, and how money is spent
  • To provide community leadership, so for example enabling different organisations to work together to make their area a better place

Briefings for people interested in being a candidate or agent are taking place on 11 March 2019 at 12:30pm and 5:30pm in the Council Chamber at 52 Derby Street, Ormskirk, L39 2DF.

Kim Webber, Returning Officer for these elections said: “The events will cover what you need to know about the election process. There will also be the opportunity to speak informally to Electoral Officers after the event. People who are interested in standing are invited to come along to one of the briefings.

“There are no set qualifications or experience required to be a Councillor. For example, skills gained through raising a family, volunteering or being active in faith or community groups are just as valuable as skills gained in employment or training. The role is a responsible position which allows you to make a real difference to the area you represent.”

To register your interest in attending the briefing or to find out more, please contact the Elections Team on 01695 585013 or by email to elections.office@westlancs.gov.uk.

In addition, the Council’s website provides details on the election for both voters and prospective candidates at www.westlancs.gov.uk/elections.
