Working around the clock to provide social care this Christmas

While for many Christmas will be a time of well-earned rest spent with families, it will be business as usual for care workers making sure older and disabled people get washed, dressed and enjoy a hot meal.

The Local Government Association, which represents more than 370 councils in England and Wales, says thousands of social care staff up and down the country will be working around the clock throughout the festive period.

Councils will be doing all they can to ensure that care staff are out across the festive season helping elderly and disabled people have basic needs attended to so they can spend time with friends or family.

It is estimated around 168,000 care workers work on Christmas Day.

While for most people Christmas is a time for people to have a break from work, councils have planned ahead to ensure enough staff are available.

Where possible, councils will also have staff on hand to help patients safely leave hospital and be cared for in the community.

Chairman of the LGA’s Community Wellbeing Board, Cllr Izzi Seccombe, said:

“Council staff provide a 365 days a year service to support our loved ones, and will be working around the clock this Christmas to ensure that our older and disabled residents receive the care they need and depend on.

“While for most, the Christmas period is a time to relax and take a break from work, thousands will be helping elderly and disabled people get washed, dressed or helped to get out and about, or checking to see if they have taken medication.

“It is really important we spare a thought for the fantastic work council staff and care workers do. I’d also like to pay tribute to their admirable efforts in continuing to provide a service while battling the torrid of weather of recent weeks.”
