West Lancashire Walking Festival

0

Stride out for the West Lancashire Walking Festival and you can learn about local wildlife as well as enjoying tours of the borough’s towns and countryside.

West Lancashire Borough Council rangers work alongside walk leaders from different organisations to provide routes that cover as much of West Lancashire as possible. All the walks are free and there is something to suit all abilities, from short themed walks to long-distance rambles.

Councillor Yvonne Gagen, portfolio holder for Leisure, said: “Put your best foot forward for West Lancashire Walking Festival events and you will see some beautiful countryside, as well as seeing parts of towns in the borough you may never have seen before.”

The first event is the Butterfly Walk on Saturday 1 August, starting from the Ranger Station at Beacon Country Park at midday. This is a relaxed, informative walk around the park of between two and four miles on which people can look at the different butterflies living there.

Walkers can take in some of West Lancashire’s finest views on an eight-mile ramble around Appley Bridge, Fairy Glen in Parbold and Hunters Hill in Hilldale, on Sunday 2 August. To take part meet at the layby on the A5209 (Parbold Hill) close to the Fairy Glen entrance at 10am.

The festival includes a six-mile circular walk around Ormskirk on Wednesday 5 August, which starts from Coronation Park bandstand at 1pm, and a four-mile jaunt around Martin Mere reedbed, which starts from the Martin Mere Visitors’ Centre at 10am on Friday 7 August.

Walks are planned for every day up until Friday 14 August, when the final event is an informative walk of between two and four miles looking at different bat and moth species living in Coronation Park, Ormskirk. The walk starts from the bowling pavilion at 8pm.
