Armed forces veterans and local school children will be helping West Lancashire Borough Council raise the Commonwealth Flag at a special ceremony on Monday 13 March, to mark Commonwealth Day 2017.
Celebrations begin around 10.00am when West Lancashire Mayor, Councillor Liz Savage and other civic dignitaries will be joined by veterans, children, parents and teachers outside the Council Offices at 52 Derby Street, Ormskirk.
Messages from the Commonwealth Secretary-General will be read out and the Mayor will also address those present. A specially-written Commonwealth Affirmation will be read before the flag is raised.
Councillor Savage said: “I am really proud that West Lancashire will be joining people across the world in raising the Commonwealth Flag.”
This year’s Commonwealth Flag raising event builds on successful events in 2014, 2015 and 2016 and will see over 850 other Commonwealth Flags raised in locations throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, UK Overseas Territories, and Commonwealth countries.
This unique initiative is again catching the imagination of thousands of participants from all walks of life, inspiring them to join with others throughout the Commonwealth. As a collective public expression of commitment to the Commonwealth, it enables participants to show appreciation for the values the Commonwealth upholds, and the opportunities offered for friendship and cooperation with fellow Commonwealth citizens around the world, young and old.
