Urgent work to renew gas main in Islands Brow area
Work follows leaks on existing pipe
Road closures needed to safeguard staff and road-users

National Grid is advising residents and motorists of urgent work to replace a gas main in the Islands Brow area of St Helens.

Work is due to start on Tuesday (1 November) to renew more than 1600 metres of gas pipe in Islands Brow, Woodlands Road and Carr Mill Road.

The work follows a number of leaks on the existing metal gas main. It will be replaced with tough plastic pipes that will last for at least 80 years, if left undisturbed in the ground.

It is not yet known exactly how long the work will take but National Grid will keep people updated and complete the work as soon as possible.

To safeguard engineers and road-users while the work is under way, the following traffic management measures will be in place:

· Islands Brow and Woodlands Road will be closed to traffic
· Carr Mill Road will be closed to northbound traffic (it will remain open to southbound traffic)
· Temporary traffic lights at the junction of Islands Brow and Woodlands Road

Stephen Murray, National Grid’s Head of Contract, said: “The existing gas main has experienced a number of leaks and it is vital that we replace it. The new pipes have a lifespan of at least 80 years and will ensure safe and reliable gas supplies for local people for decades to come.

“We are sorry for any inconvenience caused but we’d urge drivers to bear with us. We’ll do all we can to complete this essential work as soon as possible. We really appreciate people’s patience and co-operation.”

For any enquiries about this work people can contact National Grid’s customer services team on 0161 703 1000. To find out more about how National Grid replaces gas mains and how that affects residents and businesses go to www.bettergaspipes.co.uk.
