0

Tyldesley traders and community organisations are teaming up to mount a Christmas Extravaganza at Tyldesley Square on Saturday 1st December. Events start at 2pm and finish with the Christmas Lights Switch-on at 6pm by celebrity guest Leigh Centurions’ Mickey Higham. All are welcome.

Tyldesley’s recently redeveloped Square will host a Festive Market with around 15 stalls selling a wide variety of goods ranging from sweets and confectionery to toiletries, cosmetics and alcohol.

Glenn from ‘Fish Man of Leigh’ will be selling fresh fish, meat and poultry from 9am until mid-afternoon and there will be an ice-cream van and face-painting on the Square. Tyldesley King’s Centre will provide free tea and coffee and menus at some food outlets will include Christmas Specials. Local retailers will offer discounted prices and special promotions and children will receive a free present from Father Christmas.

Entertainment will include choirs from two local primary schools and dancing by youngsters from 180 Dance Centre. There will be organised children’s activities and a Tyldesley Christmas Trail Competition, for which 50p entry forms are available from 180 Dance Centre, Elliott Street or on the Square on the day.

The Switch-on centre-piece will be Tyldesley’s environmentally-friendly living Christmas Tree, with decorations designed and provided by Alison Cottriall from Embrace Charity’s New2You shop. Tyldesley’s ‘across-the-street’ lighting displays are unique in the borough and very popular with children and these, together with decorative braids on 16 street lamps, will also be illuminated at 6pm.

Tyldesley Rotary’s Julie Grundy said: “Our Santa’s sleigh is a familiar sight at this time of year and Father Christmas will start meeting children and distributing presents at 3.30pm.”

The King’s Centre’s Becky Fraser said: “We have been based here for many years and we are delighted to be supporting Tyldesley at this event.”

Emma Fernandez of Hudson’s Pet Supplies said: “I hope people from across this area will join us at Tyldesley Square for this afternoon of festive fun. There will be ample opportunities for Christmas shopping in the range of outlets here and people may be surprised at the diversity of our retail offer in Tyldesley centre. Tyldesley businesses and local community groups have pulled together and worked tremendously hard to make this year’s Christmas Switch-on an event to remember.”

Tyldesley Labour Councillor, Stephen Hellier, acted as co-ordinator with Wigan Council and said: “I would like to thank everyone for their hard work and determination to make the Tyldesley Switch-on a success. This event is aimed at uniting the community in positivity and optimism going forward. It will promote what Tyldesley centre has to offer and show-case what can be achieved here. Nationally, town centres are in retreat. I believe Tyldesley town centre, however, with its strategic location on Greater Manchester’s only guided busway and by harnessing the spirit of local people, is well-placed to build a vibrant and successful future.”
