Skelmersdale United 9 (Nine) Retford 1

Skelmersdale United ran riot in this FA Vase first round tie against Nottinghamshire side Retford, it took the visitors 3 hours to reach the JMO and took just 1 minute to go behind as debutant Ged Courtney’s cross evaded the defenders and in swept Elliott Morris to fire home.

It was the start of a rampant United display, lead by Morris and Howard whose pace on the wings lead the visitors a merry dance.

Croughan and Howard had chances to increase United’s lead and Morris duly did so on 26 minutes as Strickland’s through ball found the feet of the youngster who advanced and smashed home.

10 minutes later and it’s the turn of Mikey Howard who smashes in United’s third and just before half time Morris completed his first half hat trick, blasting the ball in from close range.

If it had been a long drive up for Retford the afternoon was going to get even longer as they trailed 4-0 at the break.

It was 5 a minute after half time as Mikey Howard got his second a near post flick on from a corner and Substitute Matty Hamilton got in on the goals as another smashed shot from the edge of the box gave the keeper no chance for United’s 6th.

Mikey Howard became the second hat trick hero of the day when he netted United’s 7th just two minutes later as again the ball bulged the back of the net from close range.

Retford had produced nothing of sorts to worry Ben Barnes in the United goal but the chance they created saw big Paul Wonham fire home to cut the arrears to just 6.

The introduction of substitutes Omar Ibrahim and Edvard Servuts soon paid dividends for United as first Ibrahim tried a long range effort that sailed gloriously in the back of the net for 8-1 and 19 year old debutant Servuts got on to a pass from Mike Grogan to fire in at the keepers near post for United’s 9th.

Paul McNally said after the game, “I felt sorry for Retford, it was one of those days that everything we touched turned to gold”.

United line up Barnes, Davies, Courtney, Grogan, Griffiths, Strickland, Morris, Djalo, Mitchley, Croughan, Howard, Subs Hamilton, Ibrahim, Servuts unused Brodie, Webster, Adegbenro.
