Skelmersdale United 1-6 Sandbach United (St Luke’s Cup)

Skem Manager must have wondered what went wrong on Saturday, he certainly didn’t put on his lucky pants!

Kicking off at 12.30 it didn’t take the visitors long to break the Skem ranks with Knight firing the visitors in front after just 5 minutes. It didn’t get any better for the “blues” as United lost the services of Harry Molyneux, whilst they were still re- grouping, Sandach extended their lead on 12 minutes. They went close to making it three soon after, as United failed to get out of bed.

There was 30 minutes on the clock when United had their first serious advances as the ever-industrious Jack Grimshaw brought a fine save from the visiting keeper, Joe Herbert went close a few minutes later but saw his header flash by the outside of the post.

All United’s hard work to get back into the game were undone as a sweeping move found Moscrop on the end to put the visitors 3 up.

A minute after the break it was all over for United as a clumsy challenge in the box saw the ref point to the spot and Knight duly added his second and Sandbach’s 4th. Taylor Jones cut the deficit to 3 on the hour as United provided their best football of the afternoon. United had beaten the same opposition 4-1 just two weeks ago but United made many changes, with a number of the Youth set up coming in for first team duties, alas they were no match for the now rampant visitors.

Two goals for the visitors in the last 10 minutes saw United well and truly humbled.

Paul McNally will have to work wonders if United are to reach the Final of the first St Luke’s Cup, they travel to Runcorn Town on Wednesday night and will need a victory to stay in the competition.
