Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust will this Friday pay tribute to a former Consultant and the founder of the Upper limb Unit at Wrightington Hospital.

Appointed in May 1979, Professor John Stanley was charged with the development of an upper limb practice to look after patients attending the Professor Sir John Charnley Unit with joint disease and hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder problems.

The unit flourished under his expertise and has expanded to become one of the world’s most well respected upper limb units. Professor Stanley’s understanding of the need for hand therapy also led him to support the development of the therapy department.

His vast experience as a clinician and surgeon was combined with his passion for teaching and research. He can be credited with developing many surgical procedures which are now used as standard in operations internationally.

There were many highlights to his career including becoming President of the British Hand Society, and Vice President of the Royal College of Surgeons, but his award of the prestigious “Pioneer in Hand Surgery” in 2016 by the International Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand was perhaps his highest accolade.

The award recognises surgeons who are exceptional and excel beyond what is normally expected in the field of hand surgery and those who inspire and influence the generations of surgeons that follow them.

As a mark of respect staff are invited to take part in a minute’s silence at the Wrightington site at 10am on Friday which will coincide with Professor Stanley’s funeral.

The Trust also plans to hold a commemorative service on the site for colleagues to share their memories and experiences of working with him.

Professor Ian Trail, said: “Professor John Stanley was a good friend and mentor to many of us and would light up a room or mood even on the darkest, dampest days in Wigan.

“He will be greatly missed and on behalf of all of WWL I would like to extend our sincerest condolences to his family.”
