Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s ‘Tree of Hope’ has turned pink to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The special LED tree at the Trust’s Royal Albert Edward Infirmary site, was installed earlier this year by local company, Festive Lights, and has since been lit in different hues to mark VE Day, the NHS’ birthday and Macmillan Coffee Morning.

But throughout October, the tree will serve as recognition of all those affected by breast cancer; and as a reminder of the importance of breast screening appointments.

Janet Ellison, Patient Navigator for the South Lancashire Breast Screening Service who was at the colour-switching ceremony, is encouraging all ladies invited for their breast screening appointments to remember how vital they are.

She said: “We hope the tree turning pink will serve as a reminder to all those eligible ladies who are invited for their breast screening appointments to attend.

“If breast cancer is diagnosed at the earliest stage of its development, it is estimated that, after five years, 99 out of 100 women diagnosed will still be alive, so being screened regularly and detecting changes early is very important.”

Throughout October, WWL staff will be getting involved in fundraising efforts with a special ‘Design-a-bra’ to win a designer bra competition with Ormskirk based lingerie business, Hattie Smalls, and a Parade In Pink day on October 2.

All donations raised will help to raise vital funds for the Trust’s Women’s Wish Fund and improve breast services for eligible women across South Lancashire.

If anyone requires further information about breast screening, contact the South Lancashire Breast Screening Unit at The Thomas Linacre Centre, Wigan on 01942 774713, or contact your own GP.
