Transition and Beyond helps hundreds

Hundreds of Wigan Borough families got a chance to get first-hand experience of the wealth of opportunities for young people and adults with learning disabilities at Transition and Beyond.

The event took place at Robin Park Sports Centre in Wigan and saw more than 75 providers from a range of organisations from the public and voluntary sector on hand to demonstrate how they could support people.

There were volunteering opportunities, housing support, leisure facilities and travel help on offer along with a wide range of demonstrators showing off innovative projects such as iRoam, which has created interactive videos of leisure centres in the borough that are helping to encourage people with autism to enjoy the facilities by being prepared.

Transition and Beyond links into The Deal for Adult Social Care which is changing the way how Wigan Council supports people to live fulfilling lives and tailor services which will make a positive impact on residents’ everyday life.

This could be as simple as help to find work, day support services, respite options, autism support, social events or volunteering opportunities to enrich their lives.

The event was planned with help from families who have gone through the transition from children’s to adult service support to make sure every aspect of transitioning from children services to adult care was met.

The Mayor of Wigan Borough, Councillor Ron Conway opened the event.

He said: “It was a fantastic day and it was wonderful to see so many families finding out about the wide range of opportunities out there that will have a positive impact, not just on them, but also play a vital role in our communities.”
