Skelmersdale United 3-1 Ashton Athletic

Skelmersdale United got back to winning ways at the JMO Sports Park on Saturday against neighbours Ashton Athletic, on a dark, damp dismal day a crowd of 179 witnessed an epic tussle.

It was a slow burner affair with United taking the lead on 12 minutes a through ball from Michael Grogan saw youngster Eddie Servuts advance on goal and fire home. Abdul Djalo was brought down in the box on 40 minutes and Mikey Howard crashed home the spot kick in what had been a very comfortable first half for Skem.

The second period that brought the game to light as Ashton push men forward hoping to get back into the game, which almost paid dividends as Ethan Beckford beat the offside trap only to see his shot go tamely wide. Abdul Djalo advanced one on one with keeper Aspinall, who pulled off a fine save and Mikey Howard had a shot that was just inches wide of the upright.

It was Beckford who got Ashton back into the game on the hour, again beating the offside trap, this time the ball found the right side of the post to pull one back.

The lead didn’t last long as just 1 minute later a defence splitting ball from the excellent Lloyd Ellams found Servuts who again found space, and neatly finished to regain the 2-goal lead.

The visitors again piled forward, a fine stop from Ben Barnes and a goal line clearance from Preston kept United’s lead intact, a shot from Josh Nicholson hit the post as again United were let off.

Skem had the chance to extend their lead on 77mins, as again Djalo was brought down in the box, Howard again smashed the ball, it cannoned off the bar and lead to a swift counter- attack, again Barnes came to United ‘s rescue with a well gathered save.

There was still more action as Kev Towey and Mikey Howard both saw efforts well saved by the visiting keeper. Towey had the ball in the net right at the death but was adjudged to be offside. The whistle sounded on a frantic second half with the supporters of both sides having witnessed a terrific afternoon’s entertainment.
