The Lancashire Sagas Project inspired by local history concert celebration

Lancashire pupils have taken part in the ‘Lancashire Sagas’ project which aimed to inspire young people to create brand new modern songs and stories through learning about their local history and bringing it to life.

Pupils have worked alongside staff from Lancashire County Council’s Heritage Learning team, local historians and the award-winning Young’uns folk group, to compose and perform their own songs and stories.

A concert to celebrate the project, giving the pupils the opportunity to perform their work, alongside The Young’uns, was held at the Winter Gardens, Blackpool, Thursday 27 June.

The schools that took part in this project were:

St. James’ Church of England Primary School, Chorley
Broadfield Specialist School, Accrington
Ridge Community Primary School, Lancaster
Royal Cross Primary School, Preston
Salesbury Primary School, Salesbury, Ribble Valley
Lomeshaye Primary School, Nelson
Unity College, Burnley
Ridgewood High School, Burnley
Mossgate Primary School, Heysham, Morecambe
Ingol Primary School, Preston

County Councillor Peter Buckley, Lancashire County Council’s cabinet member for community and cultural services, said: “I’m really pleased that the pupils who are involved in this project have got the chance to display and be proud of what they have produced at the concert.

“I know that they have been putting a lot of effort into creating their songs and stories. Through the project, those taking part have explored Lancashire’s rich history up to the present day. They have then been able to produce something contemporary which will also have an important legacy for others.

“Our local history is too important to be allowed to be forgotten or untold. I think both the project and the concert would have been really enjoyable for the pupils and something that they will always be able to feel real pride about.”

This project was a joint initiative between Lancashire County Council’s Heritage Learning Team and Music Service, and The Young’uns Folk Group.

The Young’uns are a British folk group who won the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards Best Group award in 2015 and 2016.
