The Dog Inn in Belthorn will be celebrating five years of community ownership this weekend with the launch of four audio stories created by playwright Adam Hughes.

The four stories are the outcome of an artist residency, completed remotely during the summer lockdown, commissioned by the Inn Crowd, a nationwide arts project which places live performances in pubs. The four stories created by Adam in response to the Locally Brewed project will be available for download in both audio format and article format from 14 November via The Dog Inn website: www.thedoginnatbelthorn.net

Spot On Lancashire and the national Inn Crowd partners were determined to continue to support artists, pubs and communities in a time of great uncertainty, looking for creative new ways to engage communities in shared cultural experiences. The result of the commission call out saw nine artists selected and paired with a pub. Each project is unique, centred around the pub and its regulars and wider community but all of the projects have elements of interaction between the artist and local people. In the case of The Dog Inn, local residents were asked to share stories by phone, email and social media.

Writer Adam Hughes, was inspired by the age old tradition of storytelling in pubs and how it can bring a community together: ‘I’m delighted to have been involved in this project and it has been a pleasure to work with the local residents in Belthorn. During these surreal times, it’s important for community members to remain engaged with both each other as well as local institutions and Locally Brewed shines a light on some of the remarkable people in Belthorn and the importance of the pub as a community hub.’

Sue Robinson, Director of Spot On Lancashire, one of the Inn Crowd partners said: ‘The response from the pub, the residents and the artist responding to the project has been an uplifting moment at a difficult time. Pubs and arts businesses are faced with so many challenges currently, the bringing together of these sectors to create some positive and enjoyable activity is so valuable.’

Locally Brewed is one of a number of projects being managed by Spot On while it is not able to tour professional performing arts to libraries and village halls in Lancashire. These include ‘You Don’t Know Me But…’- a live telephone play, Spot On at Home – a new tabloid magazine produced in partnership with Lancashire Libraries with articles and creative things to do at home and Spot On Stories – ten minute films on facebook and YouTube by professional artists made just for Spot On, giving audiences the opportunity to take a moment out of their day and be entertained.

Locally Brewed can be accessed via The Dog Inn website from 14 November: www.thedoginnatbelthorn.net

More information on the selected artists, projects and venues can be found on the INN CROWD website: www.inncrowd.org.uk
