Aesop’s Fables get Digital

COVID-19 is not stopping Stute Theatre from bringing magical theatre experiences to families across the North West this Spring.

Aesop’s famous fables, including the Hare and the Tortoise, The Lion and the Mouse and The Fable of the Raven and the Fox are getting a digital makeover, as Manchester based actor-musician Sophia Hatfield brings them to life straight from her kitchen table, to families in Lancashire and Cheshire.

In the show, a pair of oven gloves become a lion’s huge paws, wooden spoons and pegs become woodland creatures and children are transported on a storytelling adventure straight from the kitchen table. Originally written in the 6th Century BCE, Aesop’s Fables are the world’s best-known collection of morality tales and even during the age of COVID-19, continue to teach children the value of kindness, patience, sharing and emotions in this brand-new adaptation. The production is also accompanied with an Education Pack and home school worksheets, free for audiences to explore.

The unique performance, with live music, puppets and stories, is to be delivered live via a secure webinar on Zoom to family and school audiences, perfect for children aged 3-8. Whether at home, in a school or home-schooling setting, the production guarantees to bring joy and creativity to families this Spring.

On the challenges and excitement of bringing Aesop’s tales to life for young children during COVID-19, writer and performer Sophia Hatfield said:

“I am delighted to be bringing this collection of fables and stories together, to bring a bit of inspiration and joy to young children and families this Spring. Aesop‘s Fables are a beautiful resource and it’s been a huge privilege to be back in a rehearsal room playing, creating and bringing these stories to life for a modern audience. Who would have thought you could create a convincing tortoise from a bike helmet and 2 salad servers! We can’t wait to share this inventive, fun piece of live, Covid-proof theatre with young people live over Zoom.”

The characters Sophia meets on her journey are all brought to life with object puppetry, created from familiar household items, designed by North-West based spatial Designer, Rachel Shore. On the design of the show for Zoom, Rachel said: “It’s been wonderful to design and create in this objet trouvé style. There is so much inspiration we can draw from the objects around us. Sophia adds so much energy to everyday things that the design opportunities are thrown wide open, a paperclip becomes a cricket, a shoe a mouse, an umbrella is a raven. Designing for Zoom has its challenges but also presents us with brilliant opportunities to play with scale and perspective.”

The live show will not only entertain families in lockdown, but also when restrictions ease, as the company plan to tour the show to libraries later in the year when safe to do so.

Sophia, whose acting credits include A Midsummer Night’s Dream (New Vic Theatre), A Christmas Carol (Derby Theatre) and Much Ado About Nothing (Northern Broadsides), is proud to perform the tales in her natural Northern accent, adding a familiarity and unique element to the performance.
