Stop smoking this October

0

As part of the national Stoptober campaign this October, NHS West Lancashire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is asking residents to give up smoking for the month.

Quitting smoking will have a number of benefits on your health. The top five benefits are:

  • stopping smoking adds years to your life
  • improved smell and taste
  • physical activities including running and walking become much easier
  • lung capacity improves by 10 per cent within nine months
  • feel less stressed.

Other benefits include protecting your family from second-hand smoke and saving money.

There are several options to help you quit smoking. These include using e-cigarettes; receiving daily support with the new Stoptober application (app), as well as using a number of nicotine replacement therapies, such as patches and chewing gum.

The NHS app, ‘Stoptober’ helps you stay on track for the whole 31 days of October by providing daily support and motivation while distracting you when you are craving for a cigarette.

Dr John Caine, West Lancashire GP and chair at NHS West Lancashire CCG, said: “The health benefits that come from quitting smoking are extensive. Though quitting can be difficult I encourage you to persevere because it is worth it.

“No one is alone in trying to quit smoking – help is out there for everyone. We have clinics around the region that can offer advice on how to quit; tips on how to manage tricky situations and medication that is proven to help reduce the cravings for cigarettes.

“With the support of your local NHS Stop Smoking Service, smokers are four times more likely to succeed in stopping smoking than if they go ‘cold turkey’”.
