Take a tour around the new season of arts events across Lancashire

A brand new season of arts events, including theatre, dance, music and family shows will visit Lancashire’s rural venues and libraries this spring.

Spot On Lancashire’s season, which features 27 events from 13 different companies, opens on Monday 2 March with a homegrown musical all about the 555 bus and the kaleidoscope of characters who travel on it. The Ladies That Bus will be making a stop at Ormskirk Library at 2.30pm. The show then moves on to Bolton-Le-Sands Library the next evening and The Rainhall Centre in Barnoldswick on the 4 March.

This season signals the return of Box Of Tricks Theatre with their brand new show The Last Quiz Night On Earth. Come and enjoy a pint and a pie as we face the end of the world in a pre-apocalyptic comedy. The tour begins at The Isaac Dixon Boathouse in Fairhaven Lake on Thursday 5 March at 7pm. There are three more chances to see it in Lancashire at Calder Vale Village Hall, Longton VM Club and Burnley Mechanics before it tours further afield.

A brand new show by Kaveh Rahnama called Home Sweet Home, has been hand-picked for Lancashire libraries this April. It’s part circus, part stand-up, part theatre with a soundtrack of feel-good hits and a whole host of interesting thoughts and stories. The show will be hosted by Longridge Library, Whitworth Library and Clitheroe Library between Wednesday 22 and Friday 24 April.

There’s plenty on offer for music fans starting with thigh-slapping American bluegrass duo Truckstop Honeymoon, singing upbeat and bold songs about the strangeness of everyday life with four kids, a five-string banjo and a doghouse bass. The duo will be hollerin’ at Longton Library and Halton Mill in mid-March.

Continuing the tradition of bringing international artists to Lancashire audiences, Daria Kulesh (a rising star from the UK folk scene with Russian and Ingush heritage), brings her quest to discover her Long Lost Home to two Lancashire venues. She’ll be performing at Whalley Library and Fraser Hall in Cowan Bridge in April.

At the very beginning of May, audiences will be visited by a virtual orchestra when The People’s String Foundation bring their show Res Publica to Tosside and Edgworth. The show is a multimedia concert, fronted by virtuoso violinist, Ben Sutcliffe and backed by a 32 piece gypsy orchestra, bringing the full orchestra experience to rural doorsteps.

This season Spot On continues to work alongside the Inn Crowd, a project aimed at putting professional theatre performances in pubs. The Dog Inn in Belthorn will be hosting Jonny Fluffypunk and his show How I Came To Be Where I Never Was – it’s a show for anyone who has ever owned and loved a vinyl record. You can catch this performance on Saturday 21 March.

If you’re looking for activities to occupy the whole family, look no further than Theatre Fideri Fidera and their puppetry show about the world’s first dog. Ogg ‘N’ Ugg ‘N’ Dogg will be unleashed on audiences at Lostock Hall Library on Saturday 4 April at 2.30pm. You can also catch it at Heysham Library the following day.

For children aged 3+ there’s an opportunity to see David Gibb’s latest show, Rolling Down The Road. David Gibb is a family singer / songwriter and now proud driver of the world’s first song powered bus! You can join him at Garstang Library on Friday 24 April and Rawtenstall Library on Saturday 25 April.

Spot On have been programming in Lancashire Libraries for 6 years, and this season they’ve partnered up with the library service to host a series of author talks. Fans of crime fiction will recognise the names of Neil White and Nick Oldham, the two best selling authors will be sharing the stage for the first event at Longton Library on Tuesday 2 April.  Following that event, Darwen-born Sharon Bolton will talk about her work as a best selling author at Tarleton Library on Tuesday 28 April.

If you’re looking for something a little bit different there’s a ceilidh with a contemporary twist. Slanjayvah Danza are bringing their show 6 Feet, 3 Shoes to Bleasdale Parish Hall and Vicarage Park Community Centre this March. The first half of the show is a performance by the dance company who mix flamenco, Scottish reels and contemporary dance. The second half is a ceilidh to get everyone up and dancing.

Speaking ahead of the season, Spot On Lancashire’s Lyndsey Wilson said:

“We’re extremely excited to be able to bring such a high-quality and varied programme to Lancashire this spring and it’s wonderful to also be including shows which have their roots in Lancashire alongside international performers and collaborations. There really is something for everyone and you can expect the warmest of welcomes from our volunteer promoters wherever you go.”
