Formula 1: Change Needed or We Quit

0

There has been some major controversy in Formula 1 over the years most notably the “Spygate Scandal” in 2007 involving McLaren and Ferrari which resulted in the largest fine ever issued in sport ($150,000,000) and McLaren’s exclusion from the Constructors Championship effectively handing the title to the other team involved, Ferrari.

The latest controversial argument has arisen from Christian Horner (Team Principal at Red Bull Racing) stating that changes must be made for equalisation across the field. The comment was made after the first race of the season was utterly dominated by Mercedes.

Red Bull Racing themselves had a disastrous first race when Daniil Kvyat failed to start and Daniel Ricciardo finished 6th albeit a lap down on the leaders. Horner has said that the FIA needs to clamp down on the Mercedes domination with some sort of equalisation mechanism so he racing is closer than what it is at the moment. Horner says that the gap that Mercedes has over the rest of the field is too large and has said that the FIA has the power to “freeze” engine development for the Mercedes whilst allowing the other teams to catch up. They have stated that if such changes were not made then they have threatened to quit Formula 1.

Toto Wolff (Team Principal at Mercedes) responded to the comments by saying that the other teams need to work harder to close the gap.

Do you think Christian Horner is right to make these comments and ask the FIA to step in and halt the Mercedes dominance?
