Skelmersdale United produced a thrilling comeback on Tuesday nights FA Cup tie against Penistone Church at the One Call Stadium@JMO as the first competitive game since lockdown produced 5 goals plenty of action and a later winner for the home side.
The game kicked off at tremendous pace with chances at both ends but it was the visitors who struck first Cameron Simpson weaving through the United defence to slot home after 23 minutes, 10 minutes later and a carbon copy of the first goal Simpson scored his and Church’s second.
United had their chances but just couldn’t find the telling pass in front of goal, it would be an uphill battle for United in the second period.
Strange things happen on FA Cup days and this was to be no exception, United resplendent in their new home kit came out all guns blazing, straight from the kick off a ball into the box found Emini Adegbenro in some space to slot home, it was game on.
Adegbenro was causing the visitors all sorts of problems with his forceful running and it was on one such foray that saw him felled in the box and United drew level as “Mini” sent the keeper the wrong way on 56 minutes.
Penistone are a big powerful side who look to get the ball forward at every opportunity and their height nearly paid dividends with 15 minutes remaining, a corner was sent into the box and their big men made connection, a melee in the United box saw a shot cannon of the bar, it was a let-off for United.
United dug deep and were rewarded 4 minutes from time, when a cross came to the back post and United’s left back, Joe Herbert, casually sent a header back over the keeper, sending United players and supporters into a mass celebration.
United will now travel to Congleton Town on Saturday 12th September.
United’s next Home game will be a FA Vase tie against Stockport Town on Saturday 19th September.
