West Lancashire Borough Council have made significant progress on the Skelmersdale town centre regeneration scheme and work will begin on site again soon.

Following detailed negotiations with our partners the Council is pleased to confirm that all parties concerned with the retail scheme have reached final agreement on how it should proceed. The contract documents will be signed as soon as possible.

Building contractors will then be back on site about four to six weeks after that to start construction work again.

Councillor Ian Moran, Leader of West Lancashire Borough Council, said: “We appreciate that people living in Skelmersdale want to see progress on the Skelmersdale town centre and I can assure them that work is going on behind the scenes to make it happen. Once that is completed we will all be able to see the construction teams back on site to build our great new town centre.”

Alex Jaques, Development Director at the St. Modwen, said: “Everyone at St. Modwen has been working on this development, and is extremely pleased with progress so far. We look forward to work starting on site again soon.”

Phase one will see new shops created to house Lidl and B&M Bargains, and another retail unit will also be constructed. A fantastic new play area will be created in Tawd Valley Park and a new high street will be provided to link West Lancashire College with the rest of the town centre. Enhancements will also be made to the public areas outside Skelmersdale Library.

While construction work is carried out on phase one, plans will also start to be developed for future phases and the people of Skelmersdale and the Borough as a whole will be consulted on these in due course.

The town centre redevelopment scheme is a partnership between the Borough Council, Homes England and developer St. Modwen, and supported by the Lancashire Local Enterprise Partnership.
