Senley & Garswood Junior Football Club finally have a pitch they can be proud to call home, as their once waterlogged field at the Garswood Recreational Facility has received a much-needed drainage upgrade.

Tom Nugent, Club Development Officer, and his executive members secured the funding after a bid to the Football Foundation’s ‘Build the Game’ grant scheme, with assistance from St Helens Council’s Sports Development team and the Liverpool County Football Association.

The £42,365 grant has allowed for the installation of better drainage to the pitch, enabling the team and others in the locality, to use the grounds throughout the winter for the first time without fear of the field becoming waterlogged and freezing, barring extreme weather conditions.

Councillor Jeanie Bell, the council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health and Wellbeing, officially opened the upgraded pitch. She said: “Projects like this do not just happen; they need people with drive and vision like Tom Nugent, who can see what can be achieved and are prepared to lead and work with others to realise a project’s true potential.

“Partnership work has been a key element in the success of the project, so I would like to thank all people who offered their time and expertise to make this happen, especially to the members of the club who put in many hours of voluntary work to provide for all who participate at Senley & Garswood JFC.”
