United returned to action after nearly 6 months without a game, taking part in the St Luke’s Cup organized by Winsford FC, the four team tournament also includes Runcorn Town.

Bright sunshine greeted the players on their return and United were quickly in their stride, opening the scoring after just 4 minutes, with last season’s top scorer Emini Adegbenro tapping in from an Alex O’Neill cross. It was pretty even for the next 30 minutes with both sides having half chances but nothing concrete materializing until United struck twice in the space of four minutes Adegbenro again found the back of the net as he collected a through ball from O’Neill and Old stager Mike Grogan put United 3 up with a close range shot. At half time and 3-0 up United had the game in the bag.

With a number of changes made by both clubs at the break the game lost a bit of purpose but came to life on 70 minutes when Sandbach free kick expert Steven Jones produced the goal of the game as he curled in from 25 yards, the hosts pushed forward more trying to salvage at least a point from the game but Skem held firm and increased their lead as Adegbenro grabbed his third to seal the points.

The hospitality from Sandbach was second to none all that was lacking was the supporters from both sides, a few “volunteers” were the only ones to witness this wonderful day for football.

United entertain Winsford next week, kick off 3pm at the JMO and again the game is to be played behind closed doors.
