Residents’ delight at fourth flower show win

Tenants from Wigan Borough are celebrating winning an award for their ‘dreamy nostalgia’ themed garden at this year’s RHS Tatton Flower Show.

Wilf and Sue Ford, along with Alan Harper and other residents, are tenants at Sussex Close, Hindley, and scooped Silver Gilt in the prestigious flower show at Tatton Park on Wednesday 19th July.

Their garden is a beautiful river scene with a rowing boat and jetty, reminiscent of years gone by.

They’ve come a long way from a group of amateur gardeners and were only one point away from getting Gold. They have now been invited to the RHS show for four consecutive years and have won Silver once and Silver Gilt three times.

Wilf said: “Friends, family and neighbours have all worked hard. We want to say a big thank you to Borsdane Avenue Pharmacy who have sponsored us and given us so much support to get here.

“We were one point short of winning gold because we planted a holly tree instead of a willow tree!”

Although the group fell just short of winning gold, Wilf and Sue are celebrating reaching their own gold this weekend for another reason.

Wilf said: “We’ve already got gold really because on Saturday we mark our golden wedding anniversary! We’ll be having the champagne then anyway with our family and friends.”

Cllr Chris Ready, cabinet member for communities, said: “Well done to Sussex Close in Bloom. The colour and content of their garden is magnificent. The community effort that’s gone into the garden is a great example of The Deal.”
