Rescuers are carrying out a search for 11 crew members of a cargo vessel which has sank following a collision with a container ship in the waters close to Hong Kong. According to Hong Kong’s marine department, one man was rescued by a fishing vessel following the incident, which occurred before dawn in international waters.
An official has said that the 320ft cargo vessel had been carrying cement and that it was registered in mainland China. It is thought to have sunk following the collision with a 985ft container vessel.
The search and rescue effort is being co-ordinated from a command centre located in Guangdong province on the mainland.
The waterways of Hong Kong are regularly crowded with commuter ferried and cruise ships in addition to the massive container ships which serve its busy port.
