Mickey Howard picks up “Player of the Year award”

After a successful 2021-22 season Skelmersdale United held their presentation evening on Saturday at the JMO Sports Bar, with covid cancelling the last two seasons it was a night the fans had been waiting for and they turned up in numbers.

With the club finishing in Second spot in the NWCounties League and winning the Inter-Step play-off match at Cinderford that will now see United in the Northern Premier League, up against teams like Workington, Runcorn, Leek & Prescot Cables, it has been a good season to be a United supporter.

Michael Howard was the main star of the evening picking up the coveted “Supporters Player of the Year” award, gaining a standing ovation at the announcement, after scoring 33 goals in the season, the highest in the North West Counties Premier League, that also saw him win the “Golden Boot” award.

Michael who will be moving to Warrington Town was also honoured by his fellow team mates as he picked up The “Players Player of the Year” award to complete a memorable evening for the young striker.

There was also an award for Veteran striker Danny Mitchley, who picked up the Mangers “Player of the Year”, during the season Danny notched up his 50th goal for the club in a career that has spanned 112 games starting back in 2014.

Manager Paul McNally who has transformed the club’s fortunes over the past few years was given a special award to honour his achievements not just of this season but those of last season where he guided the club to the first round of the FA Cup for the first time in 50 years.

There was also a Supporter of the Year award that went to Michael Sweeney & his partner Ruth, who despite being of a pensionable age have both managed to attend every United game this season.

Chairman Paul Griffiths thanked the supporters for their attendance and gave a big thank you to all the companies and individuals who had supported the club throughout the season.

Paul McNally and his United squad will now take a well-earned break before Pre-Season begins in July, the first games already announced with away trips to Runcorn on the 20th July and Lower Breck on Friday 22nd July.
