Postcards from Skelmersdale

Skelmersdale Heritage Society welcomed a visit from local historian George Orr at their meeting on Thursday 5th March. George brought along his collection of postcards of Skelmersdale featuring local landscapes, many now disappeared, Skelmersdale mines, churches and school groups.

The collection dates from the 1920s through the decades to the 1960s and 70s with some images of the new town. George has collected the images into a book and has also written books about the history of Skelmersdale and Lathom. It was a memorable evening that stimulated much discussion.

Skelmersdale Heritage Society was reformed last August and since then has gone from strength to strength with well attended monthly meetings and a current membership of 30+. Meetings are held 1st Thursday of the month at the Wardens Club on Blaguegate Lane at 7pm. Entry is free for members and £1 for visitors and tickets must usually be booked as places are limited.

The next meeting on Thursday April 2nd features a talk by Richard Fletcher on Coal Mines in Skelmersdale. More details on the Skelmersdale Heritage Society Facebook page or contact secretary Carol Fenlon carolfenlon6@gmail.com, tel 07748244711.
