Police issue alert after women receives a fake bank letter

0

Police officers have alerted people to a potential postal fraud scam after a recent incident in Tatham. The message has come after an elderly woman was targeted with a fraudulent letter from someone who had purported to be her bank, and had asked the women to send her debit card and her pin number. The letter had been printed on headed paper and it had contained a stamped addressed envelope so that the woman would be able to return her details and her card.

Fortunately, the women never returned her details.

PC Andy Massingham, Community Beat Manager for Lune Valley, said ‘While the vast majority of letters that people receive from their bank are genuine, some scammers will try and use this as a way of getting people to hand over valuable personal details.

‘It’s important to remember that there has only been this one incident reported to us, however I would like to remind people that if they receive any letters from their bank requesting them to take action that appears out of the ordinary, such as sending over pin numbers and debit or credit cards, to contact the local branch of their bank and/ or contact the police.

‘If you have a vulnerable or elderly friend or relative, please let them know that this could happen so they can avoid becoming a potential victim.’

Anybody who has got any information relating to this incident or other fraudulent scams can get in touch with police on 101 or alternatively Crimestoppers can be called anonymously on 0800 555 111 or people can go online at Crimestoppers-uk.org.  Similarly, Action Fraud can be contacted on 0300 123 2040 or online at www.actionfraud.police.uk.
