New play and recreation facilities at Westhead Playing Fields

Young people in Westhead have been treated to exciting new play and recreation facilities at Westhead Playing Fields, which will enhance visitor experience for all to enjoy.

A new play area for under-13s includes a spider’s web climbing frame and activity trail, and will complement the existing play area for 5 to 12-year-olds at the playing fields on School Lane.

A space created for teenagers has fun and challenging equipment for older young people and includes a zip line, stand up roundabout, multi person rope swing and cantilever basket swing.

West Lancashire Borough Council has provided the new facilities through public consultation with the residents of Westhead to seek their views. Funding for the project has come from developer contributions from nearby housing developments.

Councillor Yvonne Gagen, portfolio holder for Leisure, said: “The new facilities look great and we are very grateful to everyone who took part in the consultation. I am sure local young people will enjoy using them for many years to come.”

To further enhance the area, tree planting and new seating will allow visitors to sit and quietly enjoy the open space, or maybe bring a picnic for all the family.

Councillor John Hodson, portfolio holder for Planning and Development, said: “I am very pleased that the money we have been able to get through planning agreements with developers will be used to benefit the community.”
