Passers-by trap bungling bank robber at scene of crime

A bungling bank robber has been trapped at the scene of his crime after members of the public came together to prevent him from escaping. The man had been recorded on CCTV video walking into Langfang City’s Wen’an Rural Commercial Bank in northern China and then smashing the bank teller’s glass window with a sledge hammer before he climbed through. The man was then recorded on security cameras walking around the staff area searching for money.

However, while he is walking around searching for money, staff and members of the public have become aware of the commotion and they begin to gather in the atrium of the bank, and cut of the escape for the robber.

Li Dehua, a bank worker, said ‘We heard somebody smashing the window when we were working, and my first feeling was that it was a robbery. So I called the police as soon as possible and locked more than 500,000 yuan cash into the safety box. Then I went to take shelter in washroom with a female colleague.’

The crowd increased in size and people power managed to keep the robber trapped behind the counter until police arrived.

According to police, the 22 year old suspect, who has got the surname Yu, has been taken into custody. The investigations are continuing.
