With beautiful walks through local countryside and the chance to sample the sights and sounds of Medieval Ormskirk, May is a month packed with fabulous free parks events.

All these events are organised by West Lancashire Borough Council’s Parks and Countryside Rangers Service.

Councillor Yvonne Gagen, portfolio holder for Leisure, said: “There are some fantastic events being organised in West Lancashire this month, so make sure you don’t miss out on all the fun.”

You can do #yourmileyourway on the ‘Royal Mile’ and help Lancashire as a whole ‘get round the world’ at the Active West Lancs Health Day on Friday 18 May. #yourmileyourway is a Lancashire-wide health initiative. The Royal Mile starts at 1pm, and line dancing sessions start at 2pm.

On Sunday 20 May you can stride out on the eight-mile Lathom Circular walk, which starts from (Rangers to insert details) at 10am.

Rangers and a local expert will be telling people how to identify the plants and wild flowers growing in Beacon Country Park on a fascinating guided tour on Saturday 26 May. The three-mile walk is free, but places must be booked in advance by telephoning 01695 622794 or emailing beacon.park@westlancs.gov.uk. Meeting point is the Visitor Centre at Beacon Country Park.

Children aged between 5 and 12 can discover new skills on two wheels at the free Bike Ability Level 1 course at Richmond Park, Burscough on Sunday 27 May. Whether you are learning to ride on two wheels for the first time or improving your balance and ability, then this session will suit you. Learn to control your bike, signal, improve observation and learn techniques to prepare you for road cycling in the future. Places must be booked in advance by ringing 01695 570258 or emailing anne.faulkner@westlancs.gov.uk.

At 9pm on Sunday 27 May find out more about moths that live in Beacon Country Park with the help of experts. You are advised to wear appropriate footwear, warm clothing and bring a torch. The event is free but places must be booked in advance by ringing 01695 622794 or emailing beacon.park@westlancs.gov.uk.

Volunteers can help the Rangers prevent Himalayan Balsam from spreading through Fairy Glen and choking native plants at the Balsam Bashing event on Wednesday 30 May. To join the bashing team you must ring 01695 622794 or email beacon.park@westlancs.gov.uk in advance.  Meeting point is the layby opposite Fairy Glen (A5209).

Junior Rangers Club Signs of Summer Thursday 31 May (Rangers to add in details about the event)

Junior Rangers events are open to children aged between 5 and 12 years of age (all under 8s require adult supervision throughout the event). Booking opens 7 days prior to the event taking place and must be made by phoning 01695 622794.

Join in with a Lancashire –wide health initiative #yourmileyourway on Friday 18th May at Coronation Park, Ormskirk. Active West Lancs will be having a ‘Royal Mile ‘ event at 1pm, where they are asking people to come along and walk, cycle, jog, scooter etc a mile along a designated route within the park. The aim is to pledge your mile and help Lancashire get ‘around the world’ in a day! At 2pm, you can ‘dance a mile’ and join in with our Line Dancing session -all welcome!
