An Edge Hill training session for standardised participants

Are you interested in contributing to the development of the next generation of health care professionals?

You could be paid to train to act as a real patient to help Edge Hill University educate its future health workers.

The University is looking to appoint a new cohort of standardised participants (SP) to help improve the student experience and make a real difference to the future of health care and medicine.

SPs are members of the general public who undergo training to portray the roles of family members or patients to enable students to develop and practice necessary skills to help them succeed in their future profession.

They provide a standardised, consistent and more realistic learning experience for students, improving their confidence and engagement.

Helen Henderson, Head of Simulation and Skills Education, said: “Standardised participants have become almost indispensable in the education and training of health care professionals. Their contribution to the creation of a safe, yet realistic, learner centred environment is invaluable. Their support in enabling learners at all stages of their professional careers to develop both competence and confidence through repeated practice helps to ensure that learning from real patients can be maximised.

“We are looking for dynamic, enthusiastic individuals from all walks of life to take part. We want our participants to accurately portray the diverse communities that we live in, and we actively encourage people of all ages, genders, and cultural backgrounds to get involved.”

If you have got some spare time that you could commit to this role and are an effective communicator, flexible, able to follow instructions well, a team player and willing to be recorded and give feedback to students, then make sure you apply.

Potential applicants will be able to take part in ‘an introduction to the SP role’ half-day at the Clinical Skills and Simulation Centre (CSSC) at Edge Hill, to see if the role is the right fit.

The next introduction sessions will take place on 13th October and 5th November 2021, and 26th January 2022, hosted by Lauren Nixon, simulation and clinical skills facilitator.

Successful applicants will undergo training to ensure they are meeting the standards needed and continuous support will be provided by the CSSC team to ensure a positive experience. SP’s will be paid at the casual work, basic pay rate for any sessions worked (this does not include training).
