Ofsted praise for school

St Augustine of Canterbury Catholic High School has been judged ‘good’ after its Ofsted inspection last month – following Rainhill High School’s identical rating in November.

St Augustine was judged ‘good’ across all aspects, including achievement and the quality of its teaching. Ofsted inspectors said: “Over their time in school, (students) make good progress from their starting points and achieve well in their GCSE examinations. In 2014, 59 per cent of students achieved five A*-C, including English and mathematics. These results are above national averages.”

They went on to comment: “The school’s central focus on improving teaching is at the heart of its vision for the school’s improvement.”

Staff and pupils in the primary phase in St Helens also have cause to celebrate. Two primaries – Allanson Street and Eccleston Lane Ends – were inspected last month, and received the ultimate Ofsted accolade of ‘outstanding’. Longton Lane primary was also inspected and rated as ‘good’.

While another secondary, The Sutton Academy, was judged to ‘require improvement’, its report found that “leaders at all levels, including governors, have acted effectively to improve the academy.”

St Helens Council’s Cabinet Member for Schools and Lifelong Learning, Councillor Sue Murphy, said: “This all adds up to very good news.  We have been understandably disappointed with recent inspection outcomes at De La Salle and Lansbury Bridge, but the successes at our primary schools, and at St Augustine and Rainhill confirm that progress is being made.

“We have also closed the gap between our GCSE attainment headline result of 5 A*-C GCSEs (including English and mathematics) and the national averages. Added to that is the continuing record of outstanding achievement in the primary sector. Given those outcomes, we are confident that the quality of education in St Helens is set on a solid trajectory of improvement.”
