Skelmersdale United 0-2 1874 Northwich
Skelmersdale United fell to another home defeat on Saturday, but came away from the game with all the plaudits, the 2-0 scoreline flatters the visitors with United having most of the play for much of the game. Having won their previous 3 away games, Skem started like a team on a mission, Elliott Morris tormenting the defence from the very first minute, Ste Milne couldn’t quite make full contact and debutant Worden blazed over.
As United dominated they had two penalty appeals turned down, first from a handball and then Milne bundled over, the ref having none of it, although Milne himself was booked moments later for a similar push.
Northwich made little headway until a free kick wide on the right, Joe Herbert cleared of the line only to see O’Neill smash the ball home from close range to give the visitors an unexpected lead on 25 minutes. United lost the influential Mcloughlin shortly after and took time to readjust as Northwich came more into the game, Jamal Crawford tormented the Skem defence but Will Bell inspirational at the back, kept out the advances.
United again started the second period brightly, Milne again bringing a good save out of Agheyere in the Northwich goal, and the unlucky forward hit the post from close range after the best move of the match involving Gallagher, Djalo & Freeman. Djalo was back to his imperious best controlling midfield, a delicate through ball found Freeman but the substitute was bundled over just outside the box.
As United pressed for the leveller Northwich were quick on the counter, O’Neill, Wooley finding lots of space in the attacking third, Bower almost got a second with his shot deflecting wide of the post.
With remaining they gained a corner, keeper Sam Ashton made his way forward the ball fell to his feet his shot was blocked and the ball cleared downfield, Joe Wolley was the only player near the centre circle, the game was up for Skem as the forward closed in on goal unchallenged. It was an injustice to Brodies men, they are the only team in the Football Pyramid not to have drawn a game, they deserved at least a share of the spoils on a day when it just didn’t go for them.
