Your right to vote

Local residents have received important voter registration information about the annual canvass.

In July all households in West Lancashire received a form asking residents to check that the information that appears on the electoral register for those living at their address is correct. Those who have yet to respond will soon receive a reminder form.

This is part of West Lancashire Borough Council’s annual voter registration canvass. The aim of the form is to ensure that the electoral register is up to date and to identify any residents who are not registered so that they can be encouraged to do so.

The annual canvass gives the residents an opportunity to check if they’re registered. It’s essential for a healthy democracy that everyone who is entitled to vote is able to, and for those who need to, registering is now easier than ever with the online system of registration.

Anyone that wants to vote must be registered. To make sure you are able to have your say at the West Lancashire Borough Elections next year, simply check the form when it arrives and return it as promptly as possible. If you’re not currently registered, we’ll send you information explaining how to do this or you can just go online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.

It’s particularly important that anyone who has moved address recently looks out for the form and checks whether they are registered. If you have changed address in the last year, you may need to register at your new address, so please check the form and make any updates on it as soon as it arrives.  Instructions how to respond are printed on the form.

You must respond to the form EVEN if all the information is correct.

The Council is legally obliged to send reminders and employ canvassers to visit non-responding properties, so please respond promptly.

Being on the electoral register also impacts on your credit score as it provides valuable proof of your identity and address to lenders. If you are not registered it can cause delays when you apply for credit, and some organisations may turn you down if they feel they cannot confirm who you are or where you live.
