Your right to vote, don’t lose it

Households in West Lancashire will soon receive a form asking residents to check whether the information that appears on the electoral register for those living at their address is correct.

This marks the start of the annual voter registration canvass. The aim is to ensure that the electoral register is up to date and to identify any residents who are not yet registered so that they can be invited to do so.

The annual canvass is an opportunity for people to check whether they’re registered.

If you have changed address in the last year, you will need to register at your new address if you have not done so already, so please check the form as soon as it arrives. It’s important for a healthy democracy that everyone who is entitled to vote is able to, and for those who need to register it is now easier than ever with the online system of registration.

We encourage residents to use the automated response service as this is the most cost effective way to respond to this form. If households do not respond to the form, further reminder letters will be issued, followed by a personal visit, so please respond as soon as possible.

West Lancashire Borough Council elections are to take place on Thursday 3 May 2018, this is an opportunity for residents to make sure they will be able to take part.

Being on the electoral register also impacts on your credit score. If you are not registered it can cause delays when you apply for credit, and some organisations may turn you down if they feel they cannot confirm who you are or where you live.

Kim Webber, Electoral Registration Officer at West Lancashire Borough Council, said:

“Anyone who wants to vote must be registered. To make sure you are able to have your say at the elections next year, simply check the form when it arrives and return it as promptly as possible. If you’re not listed on the form, it means you are not registered. Return the form and then we’ll send you information explaining how to register or you can visit www.gov.uk/register-to-vote or www.westlancs.gov.uk/registertovote and apply online.

“It’s particularly important that anyone who has moved address recently looks out for the form and check whether they are registered.”
