Young people can make music at The Zone Hyndburn

Young people in Hyndburn are invited to a free event featuring music and activities later this month.

‘Solid Workshops’ will include a mixture of live music and dance, Dhol drumming, graffiti art lessons and free running sessions with a qualified coach, for young people to try out.

The event will be held at The Zone, Hyndburn on Tuesday 30 August from 2pm to 6pm. The Zone Hyndburn was previously known as the New Era Centre, and is on Paradise Street in Accrington.

Tony Lawson, currently signed with cult hip-hop label Blah Records, will be at the event to teach beatboxing, rapping and lyric writing.

Other activities that young people can take part in include Parkour, a motion sport event which focuses on using the fastest route possible to travel between two set points. Obstacles such as vaults, jumps and swings are included on the route and those taking part will use their whole body and improve their perception of risk and how to manage it. This activity will be provided by fitness and sports education company Evolve Manchester.

Dhol drumming workshops will also be available. These will be delivered by Abdul Salek, creative director at Dhamak Beats, a Burnley-based organisation who create and perform inspirational music inspired by different cultures.

The opportunity to learn about graffiti art from artist and designer, Brodie, will also be available at the event. Since establishing the Best Joined Up collective, Brodie has been touring the world teaching painting and drawing.

County Councillor Matthew Tomlinson, cabinet member for children, young people and schools, said: “There are so many great and different activities at the event that young people can have a go at and learn from.

“There are some big names in their various fields at the event, and I hope that young people take the opportunity and go along.”

Anyone aged from 12 to 19 are welcome to attend.

There’s no need to book, just turn up at the workshop.

It is organised by Lancashire County Council’s Wellbeing, Prevention and Early Help Service.
