Work this weekend will reduce depth of Moor Street drains

Work is due to take place on Moor Street in Ormskirk over the next two weekends to reduce the depth of drainage channels after Lancashire County Council received feedback about them being difficult to cross, particularly for people using prams and wheelchairs.

A major project is nearing completion to make the pedestrianised part of Moor Street more attractive and provide a better experience for businesses, shoppers, visitors and everyone who lives and works in the town. Some minor work remains to install bins and benches, plant trees, and complete drainage channels.

County Councillor John Fillis, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “The new drainage channels run down the middle, and on either side, of Moor Street, as part of the new high-quality paved surface which has been constructed.

“The channels control and collect rainwater run-off which would otherwise pose a potential flood risk to the shops. This particular design was chosen because it can cope better with the amount of rain which could be expected to fall during a very heavy storm.

“It often takes a little while for people to get used to any change we make to roads and pavements, and it’s normal for us to receive some queries and complaints in the following weeks. In this case we’ve received some feedback about the drainage channels and, after monitoring the situation for some time, have decided to reduce their depth.

“This will strike a better balance between the need to manage surface water and the need to make sure Moor Street is easily accessible and people have confidence using it.

“We’re sorry for the added inconvenience, but this is an extra couple of weekends’ work in the context of a project which has been ongoing since February, and will be in place for many years once finished, so it’s worth taking the time to get it right.”

The county council’s highways team will use a special aggregate to part-fill the existing channels and provide a hard-wearing, high-grip surface which is coloured to closely match the existing paving. The channels will be easier to cross, particularly for prams and wheelchairs, however the work will also reduce the capacity of the drainage channels to take away the water during intense rainfall.

The work is scheduled to take place over the weekends of 17/18 October and 24/25 October, weather permitting. Dry conditions are needed to allow the aggregate to cure properly.
