Works to turn Moor Hall in Aughton into a thriving restaurant with accommodation have earned two coveted accolades in the 2017 West Lancashire Design Awards.

The awards acknowledge and promote the importance of good quality development and building design. They show how well-designed buildings and places can greatly improve our local environment and contribute to a sense of place.

West Lancashire Borough Council asked the public for nominations earlier this year and judging took place in five categories:

  • New residential developments (including extensions to existing properties)
  • Renovation/conversion of existing buildings
  • Commercial or community developments
  • Sustainable building design
  • Landscaping

Judges were so impressed with the high standard of entries this year they gave seven commendations as well as the five category winners.

Councillor John Hodson, portfolio holder for Planning, said: “The Design Awards continue to show the Council’s commitment to working with owners and architects to raise the standard of development and improve the appearance of the Borough’s environment.

“The award winners are all examples where the time and effort put in by the architects, owners and contractors have produced high quality results. We should also not underplay our officers role in that process in helping to bring forward successful schemes.”

The re-development of Moor Hall into a beautiful new restaurant with overnight accommodation impressed judges so much it won the renovation/conversion and commercial categories, and received a commendation in the Landscape category. Judges felt that the work, which involved the introduction of a new dining room and kitchen extension, designed by Falconer Chester Hall Architects, showed a superb attention to detail and was of a very high quality.

The residential category was won by a single-storey extension to Needless Inn Barn, off Lady Alice’s Drive, Lathom.
