Win great prizes with the Knowsley Writing Competition – deadline 19 February

There is still time to submit your entry for the Knowsley Writing Competition and be in with the chance of winning one of this year’s great prizes!

Open to young people and adults who live, work or study in Knowsley, entrants are asked to write a poem or short story inspired by a piece of music, which is between 100 to 1,000 words.

Local author Amanda Brooke, who is one of this year’s judges, has some words of advice for any budding authors:

“If you do want to write, you do need to keep using your imagination. It’s like a muscle, you have to keep exercising it.”

In terms of inspiration “think ‘what if’ and see where that takes you, for instance ‘what if someone found a book on a shelf which had a letter hidden inside it’” said Amanda.

“I’m hoping for some really good writing to judge!” she added.

The winner and runners-up in both categories will receive National Book Tokens gift cards, worth £50 and £30 respectively, and there are gift card prizes for promising and outstanding entries.

First prize winners will also receive an engraved shield and have their names added to the Knowsley Writing Competition Shield which is on display in Kirkby Library. All prize winners will also receive a medal.

The closing date is Friday 19 February and the winner will be announced on World Book Night on Saturday 23 April.

It’s really easy to make an entry online through the council website.

Alternatively send it by email to writing@knowsley.gov.uk or forms are available from any Knowsley library.
