Wigan Council’s 20mph zones project finishes ahead of schedule

Wigan Council’s residential 20mph zones project has finished three months ahead of schedule after the project started in March 2013 to turn Wigan Borough’s residential properties into lower speed roads. People in Winstanley are now receiving the benefits on their neighbourhood such as reduced car emissions. With 20mph now being in place it is also encouraging people into ditching their cars and to make more short journeys either on foot or by bike.

Lord Peter Smith, Leader of Wigan Council, said ‘Wigan’s journey to a 20mph town with lower speed limits in our communities is almost at its destination. By realigning motorists’ views of what is an appropriate speed limit on residential roads we have been able to create a healthier environment across Wigan Borough.

‘And now we are beginning to see the benefits 20mph residential speed limits bring through encouraging people to think about the journey they are making and reduce emissions.’

The 20mph zones help to reduce the risks of serious harm caused by road traffic collisions, particularly to children and young people. If a pedestrian gets hot at 20mph they will face minor injuries, but would the speed be increased to 30mph then the injuries will be more severe and at 40mph the pedestrian might be killed.

It is estimated that throughout the entire project, 1,800 poles have been erected with a total of 9,000 signs being placed across Wigan Borough. There has also been up to 5,000m of paint which has gone into marking up the speed limits on the roads.
